Hammersmith was with the US Army's 450th Ordnance Company Aviation, stationed in Australia. On August 16 1942 he was aboard B-17E #41-2434, assigned to the 5th Air Force, 19th Bombardment group, 30th Bombardment Squadron. They took off from Mareeba Airfield Australia to test a new flare dropping mechanism. The equipment malfunctioned and a flare exploded inside the plane, causing it to crash into the sea north of Cairns Queensland, killing all aboard.
