Martha Ellen Hammer Donley

Martha Ellen Hammer Donley was born Sept. 15, 1846, in Ohio and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha Sherman, in Lincoln, Kan., May 2, 1931, at the age of 84 years, 7 months, 17 days.

At the age of 3, Mrs. Donley moved with her parents to Bluffton, Ind., where she grew to young womanhood. In August 1865 she was united in marriage to Samuel Donley who had served through the Civil War as a soldier for his country. Some years later they answered the call of the west, moving to Lincoln County settling on a farm eight miles southeast of Lincoln. The trip was made in a covered wagon. Here by frugality, thrift, perseverance and honest dealing, they prospered.

In 1899 she with her family moved to Lincoln where she has since resided. Mr. Donley preceded her in death in 1925.

Mrs. Donley leaves to mourn her departure, four sons, John, Spencer and Homer of Lincoln, and Will of Bavaria; also four daughters, Mrs. Cora Bryan, Mrs. Myrtle Hartzell and Mrs. Bertha Sherman of Lincoln and Mrs. Olive Hartman of Kansas City. Two children, Annie and Jimmie, having preceded her in death, also two brothers, Emerson Hammer, who was once elected as senator from the state of Washington, and Hi Hammer of Sedro Woolley, Wash. One sister, Mrs. Sarah Ann Bell of Sacramento, Calif., and many other relatives and friends also survive.

She was the oldest of six children. Her mother died leaving her to care for them at the age of 13. She was faithful in this sacred ministry, always kindly in word and deed to her loved ones and all others she met. She knew the struggle against poverty, always meeting same with patience and fortitude.
