Richard Hammans, 84, of Grimes died Sunday, February 8, 2015 at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.

David Richard Hammans was born June 21, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa; the son of Donald and Frances (Perry) Hammans. Richard grew up on a farm near Lorimor and graduated from Lorimor High School in 1947. He later married his high school sweetheart, Mona Simons on February 27, 1949 at the Lorimor Methodist Church and to this union three children were born.

Richard worked as a farmer for most of his working years, and during this time he also served on the boards of the ASCS and FHA Offices in Creston. In 1981 Richard retired from farming and obtained his real-estate and broker’s licenses and began working with his brother at Country Reality.

Richard was life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Lorimor, where he served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and song leader. After moving away from Lorimor, he and Mona attended Church of the Brethren and later Calvary Chapel both in Panora. He was a long-time member of Farm Bureau and had obtained his private pilot’s license. Flying was a great passion for him and he many times said he felt as comfortable flying as he did driving any vehicle. He also enjoyed genealogy and wood working, especially wood carving. All this said, he was a devoted family man who loved nothing more than time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Mona Hammans of Grimes; his three children, Susan (Bill) Jaggi of St. Peters, MO, Denise (Tim) Tyler of Dallas Center, David (Kathy) Hammans of Urbandale; eight grandchildren, Joel Tyler, Nick Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Alex Wilson, A.J. Wilson, Eric Hammans, Evan Hammans and Jessica Hammans; four great-grandchildren, Dominic Hammans, Dakota Wilson, Eden Wilson and Elliott Wilson; other extended family and a host of friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; identical twin brother, Robert Hammans; sister, Gretchen Goecke and a grandson, Marc Tyler.
