Adam was the son Joseph Hammaker and Mary Elizabeth Louden. He was the husband of Annie Elsie Bair. He enlisted in Harrisburg August 26, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 27 as a private with Co. H, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

After the war, he married Annie Elsie Bair and fathered Ida Agnes (b. 10/23/69), Blanch A. (b. 01/01/71, d. 04/23/73), Effie M. (b. 09/24/72), Mary "Mattie" (b. 02/14/74), Claudius A. (b. 11/14/75), Alvin Thurston (b. 10/17/77), Saint Lawrence (b. 11/16/79), Myrtle M. (B. 11/07/81, d. 11/15/81), Margie Vane (b. 07/07/85, d. 01/17/88), Merlin A. & Addie M. (b. 09/03/87) [that they were twins is unconfirmed], and Erma Lee (b. 04/25/93 - married William Reinhold McNeal).

In 1860, he was a laborer living in Watts Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

He was assigned to his company at Berryville, Virginia, September 18, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865, at Camp Brightwood, Washington DC.
