BLOOMINGTON - Janie "Cookie" Houston, 55, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Feb. 25, 2009) at her home in Bloomington.

Janie was born May 28, 1953, in Bloomington, a daughter of L.E. and Janie Johnson Hamm. She was a lifelong resident of Bloomington and a graduate of Bloomington High School. Janie attended Heartland College and was a graduate of Illinois State University, studying political science, criminal law and criminal justice. Janie traveled to the United Kingdom with Western Illinois University to study the criminal justice and legal system in Britain at Richmond University in London.

She was a devoted, longtime member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church and served on the usher board there. Janie was a very active volunteer at the church and within the community; sharing her time doing paralegal work and volunteering at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, among others. She had been vice president of the Lakeside Toastmasters Club and was a good friend to those she met and always eager to lend a hand to those who needed assistance.

For 37 years, Janie was employed at State Farm Insurance Cos., starting there when she was 16 years old, pulling files and typing policies, beginning in 1970. She most recently worked in commercial fire claims until her passing.

Janie married John Houston in 1970. He preceded her in death.–;

Janie is survived by a son, John Kenneth Houston, and her mother, Janie Hamm, both of Bloomington; three sisters and a brother, Delores Sneed, South Plainfield, N.J.; Dorothy Jean (Terry) Williams, Bloomington; Tammy (Robert) Idahosa, Henderson, Nev.; and Lee Edward Hamm, Bloomington; her nephews and nieces, Marcus (Kenyetta) Williams, Bloomington; Jaraan Idahosa, Alyssa Idahosa and Darrel Green, all of Henderson, Nev.; Cheryl Sneed, New Jersey; and Victor Sneed, Massachusetts; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Jackie Brown; an infant sister, Ada Lucille "Bunny" Hamm; and two nephews, Terry Lynn Williams and Derek Taylor.

"Cookie," as she was fondly known, will be dearly missed and remembered by her family, friends and co-workers, and for touching the lives of those she met as she journeyed through this life.
