Ethel Beatrice Jones Hamlin, formerly of Ivor, entered into eternal rest and peace Aug. 9, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. She was a native of Southampton County and the daughter of the late Lorene Diggs Jones and John "Buck" Jones. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Hamlin. Mrs. Hamlin loved her churches, Gilfield Baptist Church, Ivor, Elmwood Presbyterian Church, East Orange, N.J., Metropolitan Baptist Church, Newark, N.J., where she sang in the church choirs and taught Sunday school. Ethel's hobbies included making hats, jewelry-enameling, beads, crocheting, baking cookie houses, sweet potato pies, pound cakes, creating scrap books and collecting lots of things - lots! She retired from the East Orange Board of Education as a cook. Surviving to cherish her memory are one daughter, Virginia A. Hamlin Nelson (Vernon) of Milton, Mass.; two grandchildren, Elimu Nelson of Los Angeles and Bassell Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral will be held at Gilfield Baptist Church, Ivor, Thursday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Kenneth Ricks and the Rev. Eustice Mitchell. Interment will be in Gilfield Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
