Britton, Joyce Helene Hamlett
Joyce Helene Hamlett Britton, 76, passed away on August 1, in Ann Arbor, MI, after an illness of many years. She was born Joyce Helene Hamlett on July 24, 1933 in Lamont, Iowa. She grew up on the family dairy farm, the oldest daughter of Forrest Fay Hamlett and Helen Schlumbohm Hamlett. According to her father, Joyce was a "feisty" child whose energy and interests took her in many directions. She attended Lamont High School where she was a four-year member of the varsity girls basketball team and was selected for the Iowa All-State High School girls basketball team. She graduated as class valedictorian in 1950 and received the American Legion Award. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1954 with a Bachelors of Science in Home Economic, she taught Home Economics in Waukon, Iowa and later in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1958, she married Clarold Lawrence Britton and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she taught high school in Ypsilanti until her first child was born. The family moved to Deerfield, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 1961. There, Joyce raised four children. An avid gardener, in 1985, she won the town's Sesquicentennial Garden award for her beautiful yard which she carefully mowed twice a week in different directions. Never content to sit still, Joyce gained her private pilot's license in 1980 and flew back and forth across the country visiting friends and ferrying her children to and from college. In later years, Joyce became a licensed real estate broker, first in Illinois and later in Michigan. She was named to the Million Dollar Circle of the National Association of Home Builders in 1990 and 1991. In 1988, Joyce moved back to Ann Arbor with her husband where they started a computer programming business, Britton Information Systems. She served as office manager and application developer from 1992 through 2005. Joyce was a much beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister, and a kind and gracious friend and neighbor. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Clarold; four children, Laura Josephs of Washington, D.C., Eric Britton of Chicago, IL, Val Britton of Philadelphia, PA, and Martha Lancaster of Barrington, IL; and nine grandchildren. Services will be held in Aurora, Iowa at St. Paul Lutheran Church on August 22, 2009. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donation be made to the Amyloidosis Foundation at www.amyloidosis foundation. org
