Beulah Berniece (Torrey) Ham was born on Monday; August 31, 1908 on a farm near Millville; Clayton County, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Edward and Mary (Moser) Torrey. She received her early education in a country school near Millville and then attended school in Colesburg; Delaware County, Iowa until her family moved to Greeley; Delaware County, Iowa where she graduated from Greeley High School with the class of 1926. She attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette; Fayette County, Iowa and then Iowa State Teachers College, now called University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls; Black Hawk County, Iowa. She taught one year in a country school near Guttenberg; Clayton County, Iowa. She returned to college for another year and then taught in Jesup; Buchanan County, Iowa, starting in 1930. On Tuesday; May 29, 1934, Beulah was united in marriage to Leo Gifford Ham in Jesup, Iowa. She assisted her husband in his business in Jesup, but remained as a substitute teacher. She returned to teaching after Leo's death in 1964 and taught for 9 years until 1973. During her retirement years, she traveled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed presenting travelogs of her trips. She attended many elder hostels around the country. She was greatly interested in education and established many scholarship funds including ones at Jesup Community Schools and several colleges. At the age of 90 she again decided to retire, so she sold her home in Jesup and moved to the Bethany Home in Dubuque, Iowa. She enjoyed living there, and participated in many activities at the home and assisted wherever she could be of help. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Order of Eastern Star and the Every Other Friday Club in Jesup. Beulah Berniece (Torrey) Ham, age 99, formerly of Jesup, Iowa passed away on Wednesday; December 26, 2007, at the Bethany Home in Dubuque; Dubuque County, Iowa, following
a short illness. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her five nephews and their families. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents: Edward Torrey in November, 1926 and Mary Torrey in December 1918. Her two sisters: Nettie Kinyon Brown and Hilda Mueller. Her five brothers: Henry, Joy, Donald, John, and Russell Torrey. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be after the funeral service. Funeral services will begin at: 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; January 5, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup, Iowa, with the Reverend Kristy Parker officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Crest Cemetery in Jesup, Iowa. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website.
