Britton - Funeral services for Corine Judith Akre will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the First Lutheran Church of Britton, with Rev. Sara Sorensen officiating. Burial will be at the Veblen Cemetery, Veblen, S.D. Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Friday at the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour preceding the funeral at the church on Saturday. Mrs. Akre died Sunday at Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton at age 92. Corine Judith Halverson was born to Christine (Rohn) and Harry Halverson in rural Roberts County, S.D., on May 5, 1913. She went to grade school in rural Roberts County, and attended Veblen High School. Corine, who lived in the country, worked for her room and board during her high school years. After completing her education, she worked at a restaurant in Veblen. Later, her parents bought a restaurant (The Crocus Cafe) in Veblen, and Corine was employed there. On Aug. 5, 1932, Corine married Palmer Melvin (P.M.) Akre. They lived on the Akre family farm through the Great Depression, and then moved to Veblen. Corine returned to work at the cafˇ, and continued to work there until moving to a farm in the Britton area in 1956. Palmer died on Feb. 6, 1975, and Corine continued to make her home in Britton. Corine worked as a clerk at the Ben Franklin in Britton, and for 25 years at Quarve Drug, where she retired at the age of 80. Corine was a member of the Palestine Lutheran Church and later, of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in the Veblen area. She was currently a member of First Lutheran Church of Britton. For a number of years, Corine delivered the tape recorded service to shut-ins from the parish, and had also been active in the ladies organizations. She was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. She will long be remembered for her many hand-made quilts, and her beautiful embroidery. Corine was also an excellent baker, both in the restaurant and at home. Corine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Palmer, and her granddaughter, Rebecca Christen. Surviving Corine are her two daughters: Muriel Jean (Lloyd L.) Revier of Morris, Minn.; Joan Ardell (Arden) Christen of Indianapolis, Ind.; seven grandchildren: Mark (Marilyn) Revier, Kevin (Leanne) Revier, Scott (Pam) Revier, Rachelle (Mitchell) Pratt, Barbara (Tony) Brunetti, Penny (Ken) Sallee, and Sarah (Darryl) Johnson. Corine is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; three sisters: Sally Hanson of Britton; Harriet (Orville) Schuler of Aberdeen; Evelyn Jones of Britton; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
