EMMA CATHARINE HALLIWELL
Emma is shown on the 1870 Federal Census as residing with her parents in Seville Village, Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio. She is listed as age 7, born in Ohio. and was attending school. Emma was twice married -- first to Orlin A. Dawson (1861-1917). Emma and "Orland" were united in marriage by JP Chauncey Spear, as recorded in Medina County Marriages: Volume E p141. She married second William B. Becker (1877-19-37). William was but once married, entering into matrimony at the age of forty in Wayne County on 27 May 1918 with the widow, Emma Catherine (Halliwell) Dawson.
William B. Becker, born in Cleveland, and a baker by trade, was the son of German natives Edmund and Catherine (Engle) Becker. In 1900 he and his parents resided on Dunham Avenue in Cleveland's eighth district. Edmund was a Blacksmith's helper. His wife, Catherine of 33 years, was the mother of eight, four children living. William was a baker and his sister Rose was a dress maker.
Emma was known as a forceful woman. During the construction of her home in Seville, she visited the site daily. It has been said that if the carpenters used a piece of lumber that was unsuitable to her, she would ask them to replace it. This home remains standing today (2008) and is located on the southwest corner of High and Main Streets, across from the Methodist Church. By 1930, Emma and William, resided on South Main Street in Rittman Ohio where he owned and operated a bakery.
Her death was recorded at the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics as Emma Becker, aged 79 years 11 months 3 days, a white, widowed female died 3 May 1943 at Rev. Dyes Convalescent Hospital, Norton Twp., Summit County, Ohio. Cause of Death: Myocarditis. Contributing Cause: Senility. She was buried 5 May 1943 in Seville, Ohio. Emma was a Rittman Ohio housewife, and wife of William Becker. She was born 30 May 1863 in Seville, Ohio to Levi Halliwell, born in Seville, Ohio, and Mary Spice, born in Wooster, Ohio. The Dawson family plot in Mound Hill Cemetery consists of four lots, which are located in Section 1S, Lot 608. The plot includes: Orlin A. Dawson 1861-1917; Emma Catharine (Halliwell) Dawson 1862-1943, (Franklin) Clyde 1881-1891; Kittie Dawson 1883-1894; and Pearl Dawson 1887-1888. Orlin's parents are interred in the adjoining lot 609.
