Fred was an accomplished chess player, and an amateur writer and historian. He traveled extensively in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the United States with his wife Billie. His final trip was to Hawaii to visit his daughter, Jane. He was a mason, and also belonged to the Western Twirlers Square Dance Club and the Stallion Acres Saddle Club. Fred and Billie square danced together for over 40 years. He was active in gardening, raising cattle, canoeing Big Sugar Creek in Missouri, and the Buffalo River in Arkansas.

Survivors include daughters Kathy George & Jane Gorton, grandchildren Christina Blotter, Joshua Keeter & Cory Tate, great grandchildren Jude Blotter, Evan Blotter, Chloe Blotter & Ansley Keeter.
