Nelleva Hallmark died Feb. 23, 2007, in Tyler. She was born in 1926 and was raised in the Baptist Church, where she served God all of her life. Her "long goodbye" through the disease of Alzheimer's still hardly prepared her beloved family for living without her. She was always an example of perseverance, hope, faith and love.
Nelleva graduated as Valedictorian from Kilgore High School. She was leader of the first group of Kilgore Rangerettes, after which her father called her "Captain" for the rest of his life. Her sisters and early friends called her "Deet," which seemed easier than Nelleva. Her grandchildren, Chris, David, Callie, Tyler and Brittany had their own special name for her.
In 1945, Nelleva Denton married James Lloyd "Babe" Hallmark. They have a daughter, Connie Lee Hallmark, who married Mark Ingram of Tyler. Nelleva taught fourth grade at Birdwell Elementary for over 20 years and four more years at Rose Academy in Tyler. She taught Sunday school for many years at Green Acres Baptist Church, where she and her family were original founding members.
After retiring from teaching, she devoted herself to family, friends, and neighbors, and to painting. She loved painting God's world, flowers, landscapes, birds, but she especially loved to paint her grandchildren. She wrote scriptures for each of her paintings. She won many prizes at the East Texas State Fair competitions each year she entered.
After she learned that she had Alzheimer's, she took time to write many memories of her life. She took her Bible and her mother's Bible and created an individual Bible with all of these notes for each member of her family, so even her grandchildren have insight into their heritage and that perspective of God's word. She truly believed in God's promise that, "This day you will be with me in Paradise."
Pallbearers will be Chris Ramey, David Estlund, Mark Ingram, Tyler Ingram, Steve Hallmark and Mike Breedlove.
