At the age of 15, Elmira went to Middlebury Female Seminary and then to Burlington Female Seminary. When she was 18, Elmira went to the home of her older sister, Frances Chatterton, who lived in Alabama for 18 months. She taught school there. She married William Elias Hall on May 15, 1848. They lived in Troy, New York until 1856, then returned to Pittsford and lived on a farm.
