Colette was born on July 10, 1937, to Tom and Josephine (LeDoux) Hale in Rosebud, South Dakota. Colette was the tenth of Tom and Josephine’s fourteen children. Colette was very proud of her American Indian heritage and was an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe.
In 1954, Colette married Darius Jensen and they had two children together, Mike and Marcie. Though Darius tragically died of polio in 1956, Colette never lost her love and affection for the greater Jensen family. Colette encouraged Mike and Marcie to appreciate their “Jensen side” and she helped them to maintain and grow in relationship with their father’s family throughout their childhoods.
On August 12, 1957 Colette married James Arthur Garvin in Gallatin County, Montana. Jim and Colette had two children together, Jan and Dave, making their family complete. Jim and Colette were married for 49 years before Jim’s death on July 5, 2007. Colette and Jim lived in Glenrock, Wyoming, for the duration of their marriage, and Colette remained there until shortly after Jim’s death.
Colette always had a heart for the elderly and was instrumental in starting a Senior Citizens’ Center in Glenrock. Colette, along with her dear sister, Georgia, cooked many meals for the Seniors in their community. During her children’s school years, Colette also drove a school bus for the Glenrock Schools.
Colette always had a green thumb and developed a hydroponic greenhouse at her home south of Glenrock. Colette would harvest over a 1000 pounds of tomatoes a week and all of Glenrock and Casper benefited. All of Colette’s grandchildren fondly remember picking tomatoes with Grandma in the greenhouse and how Grandma knew how to grow the best tomatoes around! In addition to her green thumb, Colette loved to bird watch and view the local wildlife. Setting up and filling bird feeders was another activity all of Colette’s grandchildren enjoyed doing with Grandma.
Colette and Jim enjoyed cooking milk can dinners for numerous people. They spent a lot of time traveling to Deadwood with Colette’s sister, Bonnie and her husband Hez. They traveled to Montana and Wyoming a lot to visit grandkids and spent their elder years enjoying each others company.
Colette is survived by four children, Mike (Darla) Garvin of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Marcie (Jim) Scott of Billings, Montana, Jan Greenough of Livingston, Montana, and Dave (Karen) Garvin of Wilson, Wyoming; 11 grandchildren, Jessica, Darius, Clayton, Sarah, Hannah, Caleb, Scott, Stacy, Kylee, Kalissa, and Sayde; seven great-grandchildren, Felisha, Garrett, Macy, Paisley, Quill, Coe, and Landon; and siblings, Tim (Nancy) Hale, Georgia (Merle) Adams, Bonnie Graeff all of Valentine, Mrytle Hill of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Jackie Huff of San Antonio, Texas.
Colette was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; three sisters; and five brothers.
