Nina Jo Hale Grimshaw passed on to glory on June 28, 2014, at the Village at Northrise Assisted Living, Las Cruces, NM. She was given much tender loving care by the staff and her daughter.
Nina Jo was born September 15, 1927 , in Caddo OK.
She is preceded in death by, the love of her life, Charles W. Grimshaw; her mother and father Oather and Mildred Hale; father and mother-in-law George Olan and Vida Mae Grimshaw; two brothers Weldon "Pete" and Jerry Hale and two sister-in-laws Theresa Grimshaw Van Orden and Dorothy "Dot" Hale.
She is survived by her two children Robert Boyd (Deborah) Grimshaw of Jourdanton, TX and Saundra Dian (Danny) Castillo of Las Cruces, NM; two grandchildren Kaitlyn (Joshua) Verette of Houston, TX and Murray Grimshaw of College Station,TX; two brothers Norman Hale of Hobbs, NM and Neal (Bernice) Hale of Clovis,NM; one sister-in-law Ronda Hale-Earles of Rio Hondo, TX; two brother-in-laws George N. (Patricia) Grimshaw of California City, CA and Thaddeus (CeCe) Grimshaw of Durham, NC; numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Jo.
Early in her life the Hale family moved from Oklahoma to Lingo, NM. It was in Lingo, at 10 years of age, that Nina Jo came to know our Lord Jesus Christ. The family moved to Arch where she attend the Portales Public Schools graduating from Portales High School in 1945. She began her college studies at Eastern New Mexico University in 1945. After two years, she started working full-time for the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico. By 1949, Nina Jo had become one of the highest paid stenographers in the state with little chance for further advancement. She decided to go back to ENMU on a full time basis. She completed her Bachelors of Science in Vocational Home Economics in 1953 after taking the 51-52 year off to teach for the Causey schools. Her next teaching position was with the Elida schools teaching Home Economics, where she met Charles Grimshaw. Nina Jo and Charlie married in November of 1954. She took a break from teaching to raise her two children when they were young. She returned to teaching in Grants where she taught third grade, she continued in the elementary field teaching in Grady. In 1967 the family moved to Fort Sumner, where Nina Jo became the first certified Business Education teacher in the state. While teaching in Fort Sumner, Nina was able to drive to Portales during the summers and complete her Master of Education in 1968. In 1972 the family moved to Hatch. Nina returned to teaching elementary school, she developed the title I reading and language arts development programs for the Hatch school system and after moving to Tucumcari in 1978 she developed the same type of reading and language arts program for the Tucumcari schools. She was selected as the 1984-85 Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher of the Year. Nina Jo retired in 1989 after completing 29 years of teaching in the state of New Mexico. Nina Jo was involved in many civic and social organizations. She was active in Kappa Delta Alpha, Delta Kappa Gamma, First Baptist Churches, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Auxiliary of the Gideons International. She served as Sunday school teacher, as Worthy Matron of the Hatch and Tucumcari Chapters of the Order of Eastern Star and as the New Mexico State President of the Auxiliary of the Gideons International. Nina Jo has left a legacy in her spiritual giving and caring.
She was everyone's favorite, loved by many and will be missed. She will be in our hearts and our souls. We love you dearly, Mom.
Services will be held Thursday, July 3th at First Baptist Church in Tucumcari with interment at the Elida cemetery.
