Dessa Lee Carson, age 87 of Gatesville, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 in a local hospital.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Matthew Neely and the Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Gatesville Masonic Cemetery.
Mrs. Carson was born on December 31, 1916 to the late Eugenia and Byrd Hair in Gatesville. She was raised in Gatesville and graduated from Gatesville High School. She attended Tarleton State Teachers College and later graduated from the University of Texas with a teaching degree. She married Grady Carson in 1959. She taught school in San Angelo, San Antonio and Gatesville and after teaching for over 35 years, she retired.
She was a member of the Foster Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church, where she also played piano. She was an associate member of the Wesleyan Circle, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Morris Federation, Friends of the Library and the Coryell County Museum. She volunteered over 2500 hours at Coryell Memorial Hospital with the Coryell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Grady Carson and a brother, James Marion (Sonny) Hair.
She is survived by her daughter, Nora Jean Neely and husband Tom of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Ellen Jean Neely and husband, Jeffrey Arnold of Chicago; Timothy Thomas Neely and wife, Karen of Houston and Matthew Martin Neely and wife , Ginger of Houston; great grandchildren, Jessica Kayne Jefferson, Jenna Logan Jefferson, Catherine Grace Neely, Jackson Thomas Neely and Matthew Noah Neely.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 2600 E. Main St. in Gatesville or to the Coryell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 1507 W. Main St. in Gatesville.
