Injuries received when he was struck by an automobile yesterday afternoon proved fatal last evening to Charles Haines, seventy-seven years old and widely known Verdi resident.

Deputy sheriffs said that Mr. Haines was crossing the highway near the Mortenson service station at Verdi and apparently ran in front of a car The machine, driven by Theodore A. Hass of Venturia, S.D., swerved nearly into the gasoline pumps at the service station, but the fender and windshield of the car struck Mr. Haines. He was brought to a hospital here and died without regaining consciousness.

Mr. Haines was born in Sweden in 1864 and came to the United States as a boy of twelve. He went to work in the lumber camps of Minnesota, and came to Verdi thirty-five years ago. Verdi was then a busy lumber town and he was employed in the mills. For the last several years, he had been engaged in cutting and hauling wood.

He leaves no relatives. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Verdi Cemetery. The Rev. C.W. Graves will be clergyman. The Ross-Burke Company is in charge of the services.
