Djehane Sadek Hauge, a much loved wife, mother and grandmother was born on May 14, 1943 in Cairo, Egypt and passed from our midst on December 3, 2011 at 3pm due to Metastatic Breast Cancer. She battled cancer to the end with courage and dignity and provided inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband Robert Hauge, her daughter Angie Gibson and son-in-law Jeffrey Gibson, granddaughter Mia Gibson living in Houston, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Garrana and wife Barbara living in Austin and Mohi Garrana and wife Iman in Cairo, Egypt. She is also survived by her nephew Sherif, and niece Nayla both of Cairo, Egypt.

Djehane came to Austin, Texas in 1963 where she enrolled as a freshman at UT with a major in linguistics. She ultimately graduated from the University of Houston with a major in French. She taught French in a number of high schools and more recently taught French and Arabic at Rice University Continuing Studies. Language was her first love and she greatly enjoyed transmitting her extensive knowledge to students who in many cases became her close friends. She also loved the arts and classical music and occasionally would admit at her husband's urging that a few songs of Willie Nelson did not sound too bad. She enjoyed writing and authored a number of unpublished short stories and learned the art of constructing websites to which she applied her unerring judgment of color, beauty and taste. She served as a Democratic precinct chair for a number of years with strong beliefs in working for a fair and just society for all peoples of this world. You could always put a smile on her face by showing her a picture of any baby, they were all beautiful to her.

She was married to Robert for 23 years as of this December 2. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Djehane's name be directed to: The Djehane S. Hauge Foreign Language Fund, Rice University, P.O. Box 1892–MS 81, Houston, Texas, 77251-1892
