HAGOOD -- George Wendell Hagood, 98, was born in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma Statehood and died in a local hospital January 27, 2004 after a short illness. He was the son of a country doctor. He is survived by his wife, Nadine Hagood, with whom he had celebrated 66 years of marriage; and two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Janpol of Albuquerque, Nancy Goolsby and her husband, Robert; and one beloved grandson, Mark Goolsby all of Idabel, OK; one sister, Ann Jones of Nakomis, FL. Dr. Kenneth Hagood, their son, preceded his father in death. Wendell received his Bachelors degree from Southeastern State University in Durant, OK, his Masters degree from Oklahoma State University, and his law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1935, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Before receiving his law degree, he taught in the State School for the Blind and was later Principal of the elementary school he had attended as a child. After law school, he was in private law practice in Durant. He was employed in 1941 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was transferred to Albuquerque in 1945 where he served with the Real Estate Division of the Corps until he retired in 1971. At the time of his retirement, he was Chief of the Acquisition Branch with many statewide responsibilities which included acquiring land for the White Sands Missile Range. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served in various offices. He was a volunteer for the Storehouse for many years and served on the Board of Directors. He was an active member of Knife and Fork and served faithfully as secretary. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution serving as State President, a National Trustee, and as Vice President General of the Tri-State Organization of New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. Wendell lived a beautiful life with an extraordinary love for his family, life, Canadian fishing trips, humor and writing poetry. Cremation has taken place and a private Memorial Service and celebration of this outstanding man's life was conducted by Rev. Paul Debenport at the family home.
