BISHOP Starke Hagood Bishop, 78, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. She was born on April 18, 1935 in Easley, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Dorothy Grogan and Albert Starke Hagood who was killed in action while serving as an army officer in WWII in Belgium. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. and Furman University in Greenville, S.C. where she participated in various theater productions including lead roles in The Solid Gold Cadillac and The Barretts of Wimpole Street. She graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. She married Benjamin C. Bishop, Jr. in Greenville, S. C. on June 21, 1958. They lived in Cambridge, Mass., Greenville, S. C., Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN and came to Jacksonville in 1972 when Ben purchased Allen C. Ewing & Co. Starke was active as a docent at the Cummer Museum of Art, a member of the Alyssum Garden Circle, The Travel Club, St. Mark's Episcopal Church and the proud owner of Maggy, a certified therapy dog. Together they visited patients in hospitals and elderly care to provide comfort. Starke loved her family and friends and travelling to visit them throughout the United States. She and Ben shared a passion for travel abroad. Their extensive trips took them to most of Europe, Africa and Russia. They loved train travel throughout the U.S. and abroad. Starke was known by her many friends as a gracious and charming Southern lady. Her family remembers her as a loving, generous and spirited wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who always had a smile on her face and great stories to tell. Starke is survived by her husband Ben of 55 years, her children Dorothy Bishop of New York City, Katharine Reeves and son-in-law Quillian Reeves of Atlanta, Ben Bishop and daughter-in-law Brooke Bishop of Ponte Vedra Beach and grandchildren Charles and Dorothy Reeves of Atlanta and Cord and Darby Bishop of Ponte Vedra Beach. She is also survived by her brothers Albert Starke Hagood and sister-in-law Helen Hagood of Greenville, S. C. and Luther McBee and sister-in-law Terry McBee of Charleston, S. C. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Monday, June 17th at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with a reception following at the church.
