STATESBORO - George C. Hagins, Jr. died Monday March 5, 2007, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.He was born to George and Lucille Hagins of Emanuel County in 1939. He was a fullback for the Statesboro High School 1956 state championship football team and was an Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in recreation management and was in the recreation field for 10 years. After returning to Statesboro as an insurance agent, he became involved in Georgia Southern Athletics as a baseball time-keeper and football statistician. He was a strong supporter of GSU athletics and was a member of Southern Boosters.
He was a member of the Georgia National Guard for 14 years, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant. He was a former member of civic clubs and served as an officer on the state level. He enjoyed his membership in the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where he has served as Bible Study superintendent class teacher, men's brotherhood and choir member. He worked in the insurance field for 30 years and waws an avid sportsman. He was a "people" person and enjoyed his friends and family. He liked sharing his pond and giving fish to friends. He touched many lives with the hymns he sang, which demonstrated his strong faith in the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Penny R. Hagins; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol R. and Jimmy Mixon of Hayesville, NC; his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Tammy Hagins, of Ft. Worth, Texas; his grandchildren, Zachary, Matthew, and Hannah Mixon of Hayesville, N.C.;one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Linda Hagins; one sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Roy Thompson; his mother-in-law, Milburn Rimes; and sister-in-law, Judy Rimes all of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The graveside service will be held in Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. 8462, Chicago, Illnois 60680.
