Mass of Christian burial for Frederick A. Hagel, age 63, Ridgeview was held Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m., MT at the All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte, SD. Father Brian Lane officiated. Burial was in the United Eagle Butte Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Prayer service was held on Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.. Mr. Hagel passed away December 2 at Fort Meade VA Hospital in Sturgis.
Frederick Andrew Hagel was born April 15, 1942 to Leo and Elsie (Eldridge) Hagel at Eagle Butte, SD. He attended school at Timber Lake Parochial School, Eagle Butte and Ridgeview schools. Fred grew up on his parent's place helping farm and ranch north of Ridgeview, SD. He enlisted in the United States Army in August in 1960. He attended Basic Training at Fort Hood, Texas. Fred was a truck driver with the 8th Infantry Division Artillery Headquarters Battery in Baumholder, Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Army in August in 1963.
Fred married Kolleen Bringman in October of 1963, and they had two children, Jay and Terri. Fred was an iron worker by trade. He started doing ironwork in 1970 on the Oahe Dam. He continued doing ironwork in Nebraska. Fred moved to Alaska in 1979 to work on the Alaska Pipeline. He married Myra Kerr in Fairbanks, Alaska on September 2, 1983. They made their home in Alaska until 1995. Fred and Myra then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where they made their home until Fred's retirement in 1998. Fred and Myra then moved home to Ridgeview. Fred's career as an ironworker took him and Myra from the west to east coast and they lived in many states.
Fred never met a stranger. He enjoyed knowing people and made many and long lasting friends over the years. He enjoyed working around home. Fred always had time for a cup of coffee and a good visit. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. Fred loved his grandchildren and always had a story to tell about them.
Fred is survived by his wife, Myra, and his mother, Elsie, of Ridgeview; one son, Jay (Mary) Hagel of Arlington, WA; one daughter, Terri Hagel, of Lincoln, NE; one stepdaughter, Lynnette Kamps of Missoula, MT; one sister, Lila Robertson of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Marcus Kamps, Leo Hagel and Morgan Hagel; and several nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leo, his grandparents and one brother.
Casketbearers were Leo Fischer, Andy Fischer, Bob Hagel, Red Traversie, Bernie Tibbs and Frank Bringman.
Honorary Bearers were Terry Traversie, Dick Gray, Chuck LeCompte, Dennis Day, Danny Day, LaHoma Fleshman, Dan Keckler and Family, Bob Keckler and Family, Paul Lawrence and Family, Marty Lawrence and Family, Elizabeth Olson, John and Sharyn Holloway, and all other friends and family.
