William was the second of three sons born to James Hacking and Ann Pearson Hacking as indicated by the following transcription from his BAPTISM CERTIFICATE:

Baptism solemnized in the Parish of Burton in Kendal in the Diocese of Carlisle and County of Westmoreland. 19 December 1801 WILLIAM son of James and Ann Hackin (Hacking) Abode: Burton in Kendal, Father's Occupation: Twine Spinner. Ceremony was performed by John Hutton B. D. Vicar.

I certify that the foregoing is a true Copy of the entry of the Baptism of WILLIAM HACKIN in the Register of Baptisms for the said Parish of Burton in Kendal. Dated this 21st day of January 1955. Signed: /s/ J. B. Phillips, Vicar

His older brother James Hacking, died as an infant in 1800. His younger brother was also named James Hacking. The will of his father James shows that the family held substancial property, which William as the oldest living heir received the major portion.

The 1841 Census in Burton, Westmorland, England lists him as a School Master with his wife Ann Pearson Hacking (married 25 February 1826 at Burton in Kendal) and children Martha, Henry H., Robert G, Ann, and Elizabeth. Another son, James had died as an infant by then, and a daughter Mary born later also died as an infant.

Some family stories had claimed he was a doctor and a bachelor, but the census and immigration records disprove this. However, the stories also claim that he drown while fishing, which may be true because when his wife and children, including two more--William and John Graham Hacking immigrated to America in 1849, William was not with them. In later United States census records, Ann is listed as a widow.

Death date and burial location are speculation. However, some have given 1880 in St. Louis as William's death, but this is not possible because his son Henry returned to England to settle some things for his father's estate before the Civil War and there is no record indicating William was living after the birth of his son John Graham as mentioned in the paragraph above. The only thing in 1880 is that his wife Ann is listed as widowed on the 1880 US Census in St. Louis, but this is the first census to give marital status and he is not with the family on the 1849 Ship's Passenger List, or 1850, 1860, or 1870 United States Census. We have found no official record listing William after the 1841 Census mentioned above.

Please also note that William not only had a father, 2 brothers, and a son all named James Hacking, but both his wife and his mother were named Ann Pearson. Guess what -- there is more...... but I will save that for later.
