Margaret's parents were Nathaniel Wilson Hacker (1827-1917) and Sarah Ann Smith (1832-1921). She was the ninth of ten children born to this couple. Her siblings were: John, Sylvester, Orrin, William, Martha Jane, Laura, Mary, Ella, and Benjamin Franklin.

Margaret married Spencer Evans on 21 December 1893 in Rantoul, Champaign Co., IL. They became the parents of the following seven children:
Leta, born 1897
Verma, born 1900
Zelda, born 1902
Delosse, born 1906
Ivan Kenneth, born 1908
Dale Edsel, born 1912 (twin)
