Hershel Walton Hypes, 86, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2009 in the St. John's Care Center.

He was born on May 16, 1922 in Bluefield, West Virginia, the son of Luther W. and Gertrude N. (Doyle) Hypes.

He served our country in the United States Army during World War II under General George S. Patton in the 808th Tank Battalion and was a member of the VFW Post 8673 Rocco-Welch. He was a member of the Hillside Church of God.

Hershel is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Lela and they together owned Mad River Florist for thirty years. Hershel was an accomplished Horticulturalist and during the past twenty years excelled in woodworking. He also enjoyed raising Beagles for over thirty-five years.

Hershel is also survived by one daughter, Gayla Hypes of Columbus, one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Elizabeth Hypes of Springfield, two sisters, Nellie Schmenk and Sylvie Petersen both of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Hershel Jr.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME with Pastors George Reed and Brent Farmer officiating.

Burial will be in the Ferncliff Cemetery.
