Jesse Elmo Gwyn, age 82, died Dec. 28, 1997, at his home. He was an active member of Beech Grove Baptist Church, deacon, trustee and Sunday school director. He was also a member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Sioux Tribe No. 9, Achilles.

In 1980, Jesse retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a welder after 38 years of employment. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucy O. Gwyn; two sisters, Helen Gunn and Elsie Dame; five brothers, Patrick F. Gwyn, John M. Gwyn, Bernard Gwyn, Joseph Gwyn, Boyd Gwyn, and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Claude Taylor will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Beech grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to Beech grove Building Fund.
