Phyllis J. Gwinn Bircher, 87, of Madison, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Jewel House.
She was born May 17, 1924, in Middletown, the daughter of Dr. G.S. and Eva Ritchie Gwinn. She was raised in Middletown until the age of 8, then her family traveled for several years before settling in Madison in 1936. She was a 1942 graduate of Madison High School and a 1946 graduate of Hanover College with a bachelor of arts in sociology and psychology. While at Hanover College, she was a member of the Phi Mu sorority. She began a career in social work in 1947 with the Jefferson County Welfare Department and worked there until 1963. She and her husband had co-owned Bircher Volkswagen, Bircher Subaru, Yamaha of Madison and Honda of Madison, which she managed until 1981. She was a member of First Christian Church since 1937. She was a past worthy matron of the Madison Chapter Order of Eastern Star 530, now Hanover Chapter 525. She was also a member of Beta Chapter of Tri Kappa and the Emma Scott Circle of King's Daughters. She enjoyed NASCAR, especially drivers Kyle Busch, Michael Waltrip and Jeff Gordon. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing Nintendo, socializing with friends and her dog.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara S. Bircher of Madison and Brenda K. Wilson of Dupont; one sister, Lucille Browne of Madison; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard A. Bircher, whom she married Oct. 17, 1948, and who died April 27, 1988; and her parents.
The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Springdale Cemetery.
