Birth: unknown
Dallas County
Alabama, USA
Death: Mar. 31, 1885
McLennan County
Texas, USA

Sarah Gwin was born around 1826 to John and Jane (Walker) Gwin in the new town of Cahaba, Alabama's first state capital. We believe her to be their fifth child. Sarah and her sister Ann married two Basset brothers--Louis and Joseph, respectively. Sarah was about 15 years old when she married Louis on 18 Mar 1841, and they had two daughters: Emma (with whom Sarah lived and at whose home she died) and Ann Adelia, who died young.
Louis died early, and she and Emma moved to the Waco, Texas, area during the Civil War where Emma, an accomplished pianist, had been hired by a local college to replace a music professor who had enlisted in the CSA.

OBITUARY from the Waco Daily Examiner (Waco, Texas) Wed., 1 Apr 1885:

"DIED. Mrs. Bassett has resided in Waco for the past twenty-five years, and no one was more honored and esteemed. Loved by every one who knew her, made life worth living, but when the angel of death hovered over her and the Christian spirit took its flight home to the God she worshipped, she calmly and peacefully slept. A gloom will be cast over her large circle of friends when it is learned that this aged lady is no more, but they will all know that such a true woman as she has always shown herself to be, is now at rest. Mrs. B.'s husband died many years ago, and she leaves one child, a daughter, Mrs. C. C. McCulloch, with whom she lived at the time of her death.

"The funeral will take place at 4 o'clock this afternoon from St. Paul's church, Rev. Francis R. Starr, officiating. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery."
