Gertrude Guidry Alpha was born in Ghed, Louisiana on June 27, 1913 and was one of four children born to Ella and Benjamin Guidry. Her sister was Mary Lou LaVergne, and she had two brothers, Perry Guidry and Cecil Guidry, Sr. She was 98 years old when she passed away in Baytown, Texas on Friday, November 4, 2011.
She had lived in Baytown for most of her life, where she and her husband, Paul M. Alpha, Sr., raised their five children: Paula Alpha, Louise Flippo, Marilyn Alpha, and Paul Alpha.
She was a very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters and was a talented seamstress, knitter and crafter, making her own patterns for everything.
Her passions included cooking, working in her yard and decorating for Christmas. She made her own Christmas decorations out of old jewelry, styrofoam balls, tea strainers, decorated slinky trains with paint and jewelry and made pyramid trees adorned with jewelry.
A Rosary was recited at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Navarre Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 7, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Fred O'Connor officiating. Burial followed at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
