Channing E. 'Chan' Guffey, former publisher of Guffey's Executive Journal, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at the age of 83. In 1963 he established Guffey's Executive Journal, a weekly newspaper that reported business transactions in and around Oklahoma City and Tulsa for three decades. He was a life member of the Oklahoma Historical Society and Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalism fraternity. He was inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame in 1989. Guffey was a reporter and assistant city editor and, from 1955-61 he was city editor of The Oklahoman. Guffey was born Oct. 1, 1924, to John and Elsie Guffey in Kingston, Mo. He was a member of the Kingston Federated Church. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Oklahoma City University after attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He was editor of a newspaper in Woodward, OK where he met and married Nina Hope Annis on Valentines Day 1947. The Guffeys were married 60 years. Guffey is survived by his wife, Hope, a former speech and English teacher at Harding High School and guidance counselor at Putnam City High School; three children, seven grandchildren and three great -grandchildren as well as two brothers, Donal Guffey of Columbia Mo. and Roger Guffey of Carefree Az. Guffey's son, Randy and his wife Mary Jane of Redding, CT are parents to John and Kyle Anne. Daughter, Annis Kernan and her husband, Patrick Kernan of Broken Arrow, OK are parents to Army Captain Andrew Kernan, Eric Kernan, Megan Jewell, Marine Lance Corporal Ryan Kernan and Lea Kernan. The Kernans are also grandparents to Lily Kernan, Tanner Kernan and Ryleigh Jewell. Daughter, Kim Guffey currently lives in Broken Arrow, OK. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 3008 at Hahn Cook Funeral Home, 6006 NW Grand Blvd. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
