Grandmother Katherina was also born and raised in Switzerland, and her ancestors had lived there at least since the seventeenth century. As far as we know, Grandmother had only one brother.
By the time her husband left for the U.S., Katherina had two daughters, a little girl named Margreth and another named Anna. It must have been difficult for her and the little girls to remain at home when Christian left for America. She probably stayed with her parents until she got the summons from her husband to follow him. She already had relatives living in the U.S., and she probably made the trip with other loved ones.
Unfortunately, the trip was not to be a happy one. Margreth, aged two, sickened and died on the voyage and had to be buried at sea. It must have been especially difficult for her mother to watch as her fleshly body was consigned to the depths, but Grandmother knew she would meet her little girl again in a better place. How sad it must have been for Grandfather when he went to meet his family and found not the two little girls he had left behind but only one. They were to have seven more children, including another little girl named Margaret, who was also to die young.
Grandfather and Grandmother decided to take up farming in Lewis Co., MO, and they bought a farm and built a nice house, which is still in the family today. They sleep side by side in a tiny rural cemetery until they hear the Masterís call.
Katherina was the daughter of Christian Margadant & Margreth Werli. She married Christian Gruber on 7 July 1852 & they had 9 children. Katherina immigrated to the U. S. in 1857 & one of her daughters died & was buried at sea.
