The Dispatch, Aug. 15, 1927, pg. 1

Mrs. M. E. Black, aged 71, who lived on the west side of Thomasville, was instantly killed when struck by a truck on the main street of Hillsboro about five o'clock Saturday morning. She and other members of her family had motored to Hillsboro where she was taking treatment at the hands of a physician widely known throughout this section and she was struck as she alighted from her car and started across the street to the doctor's office. The truck was driven by Johnny Roberts, negro, an employee of the Durham Herald but according to reports from Hillsboro the accident was unavoidable on his part.

There is at Hillsboro a doctor whose fame has spread throughout this region and it is said that hundreds of people go there from many counties in the State seeking relief from all sorts of ailments. In order to get in line before the crowd arrives many go before daylight and this was what Mrs. Black had done.

Her son, Fred Black, who lives in the home, was driving his car and had just arrived at Hillsboro where his mother was to receive treatment from a physician. Mr. Black's wife and two small daughters and Mrs. Lee Sullivan were accompanying them on the trip. W. W. Russell, of the Russell Funeral home at Thomasville, was notified and went for the body, arriving back home early in the afternoon. Mrs. Black, who was the widow of Wesley Black, is survived by a daughter and three sons: Mrs. Robert Sechriest and Fred Black, of Thomasville, Charlie Black, of Greensboro, and Ollie Black, of Holly Grove. Funeral services were at Emanuel Reformed church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock bt Rev. Sterling Whitener, and Rev. J. A. Palmer.

Daughter of Ambrose & Ellen (Kapley) Grubb.
