Martha Jane "Susie or Suzie" Dawson Groves
Birth: Jul. 15, 1914
Tulsa County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: May 28, 2001
King County
Washington, USA

An unusual phenomenon occurs with both of my parents' death dates. James, my father, died on May 25,1995, which did not fall right on Memorial Day that year, but sometimes it does. Martha Jane, my mother passed away right on Memorial Day, May 28, 2001, but the anniversary of her death doesn't always fall on Memorial Day. Normally I believe that it would be only once every 6 years or so that the date would occur exactly on Memorial Day, but with one on May 25, and one on May 28, it is only about once every 3 years or so that one or the other of them falls exactly on Memorial Day. This year, 2009, it is my father.

My mother was 15 when she met my father. She loved his starched white shirts. She invited him to her birthday party in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It was being held at her Grandparents' home and they were 1889ers (Sooners) Pioneers in Oklahoma. My mother was visiting her grandparents for the summer. She actually lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My father was attending summer school, and he did live in Oklahoma City. They did not marry for 10 more years, but were pretty smitten with each other. They married on May 5, 1939 in a place which was not either one of their homes, but about half way between Tulsa, Oklahoma, where my mother lived and Houston, Texas, where my father's family lived. They married in Oak Cliff, Texas, which is now a suburb of Dallas, Texas. They were married 56 years before my father passed away.
They were both interior designers, and often worked for famous furniture companies, and often had their own antique and furnishing stores. They lived in Houston, Texas, then the Bay Area of California, then back to Houston, then Kerrville, Texas. Then my mother moved from Kerrville to Washington State. They both loved to cook, and served great food at many parties. My father was a bit better at cooking and my mother was better at taking pictures.
