On September 4, 2009 the spiritual light of our family, Lucille Grover Berchtold was taken home after 95 years of devoted service to everyone in her family and sphere of influence. She died of causes incident to age at her son's home in Brigham City, Box Elder County, Utah.
Lucille was born February 20, 1914 in Fielding, Utah, a second of 12 children of Don Merlin and Jeanette Morris Grover. She attended grade schools in Garland, East Tremonton and Penrose and graduated from Bear River High School in 1932. She also attended Utah State Agriculture College.
She married Lenard N. Berchtold on May 26, 1932 in Logan LDS Temple, he died June 8, 1937. She then married Joseph Ersol Berchtold, Lenard's older brother, November 21, 1938.
Lucille was also sealed to him on December 17, 1965 in the Logan Temple. He passed away March 24, 1993.
Lucille was blessed with an unwavering testimony of the gospel of Christ and had a great love for her God and Savior. While raising her family she served in many capacities in the church including being Primary President, MIA President, counselor in the MIA Stake Presidency where she received an Honorary Golden Gleaner Award, counselor and secretary in the Relief Society, and teacher in all organizations. She served many years as a Visiting Teacher Supervisor.
She has been a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for many years and served as secretary of her camp. She was a member of the Kindergarten Club and served as secretary- treasurer. She has been very influential in her family and has been a great example to her children and grandchildren.
Lucille had a great love for her ancestry and worked diligently all her life, researching her family's histories. She also wrote many stories of their lives, kept numerous scrap books and genealogical records, and spent many hours in the temples granting to them a hope of exaltation in the life to come.
Lucille lived with her husband and family, first in Penrose, Box Elder County where they had a small farm. In 1947 they moved to Eden in Ogden Valley where they had a large dairy farm operation. Then in 1949 they moved to the crown jewel of their family homes in Alpine (Star Valley), Wyoming where they had large ranch near the beautiful Targee National Forest. When the Palisades Reservoir was completed in 1956 they were forced to make a final move to 228 East 3rd So. in Brigham City, Utah where she lived for 54 years, the last 15 years alone, following her husband's death.
Lucille is survived by three children. They are Lenard Don and wife, Carol Giffin Berchtold of Brigham City, Joseph Ersol and Susan (Sue) Bierwolf Berchtold, Ogden and Moana Berchtold and Alan Jensen, Brigham City. She had 29 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Two brothers, Scott and Mady Grover of Arizona, Jed and Joyce Grover of Alaska and one sister, Iva Grover and Delwin Cobb of Washington State.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, one son, Robert Ersol Berchtold who died on 11 November 2005 and two infant sons, Tony Scott and Mark Melvin who died shortly after birth. Her parents, 5 brothers; Jesse, Melvin, Grant, Don Morris and Donald Merlin and 3 sisters; Viola, Alta and Rita also preceded her.
Lucille's viewing will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9th at the Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 10 September 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing beginning at 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. in the Brigham City 1st Ward Chapel, 236 East 100 South, Brigham City.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery following the funeral service. Special thanks is given, by the family, in remembrance of their Mother's gentle loving care given by Love Hospice, their officers, caregivers, companions, nurses and Social Services prior to her death.
