Mrs. Denton Passes Away At Age of 93

Mrs. Jas. W. Denton, Caddo county resident for the past 36 years and who pioneered in at least two communities in this state and one in Kansas, died December 17 at her home near Eakly at the age of 93, 6 months and 23 days.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Denton December 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the home of her son, W.E. Denton in the presence of many relatives, neighbors and friends. The Eakly quartet was in charge of the song service and Rev. C.P. Kerran of Thomas delivered the sermon.
Laura Mildred Grounds was born May 24, 1847, near Liberty, Bedford county, Virginia. At the close of the Civil war, she, with her mother, three brothers and three sisters left their plantation home to start a new life in the west. They first settled in Montgomery county, Kansas.
In 1872 she married James W. Denton, a confederate soldier form Faircastle, Va. To the couple six children were born, the eldest of which died in infancy.
In 1889 she moved with her husband and children to Oklahoma Territory, near Italy (now Perkins, Payne county) where she resided until 1904 when the family moved to the present home near Eakly.
In 1888 she united with the Baptist church, later transferring her membership to the Christian church at Perkins.
She is survived by two sons, W.E. and Albert Denton, who reside at the home; three daughters, Mrs. James M. Graves, Perkins; Mrs. Elsie D. Hand, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. V.S. Scott, Wichita, Kansas. There are also five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
