Mary A. Gingrich, long an active Northfielder, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1986, in North Florida Special Care Center, Gainesville, Fla. She was 92. Mrs. Gingrich came to Northfield in 1915 as the bride of Dr. C. H. Gingrich who was professor of mathematics and astronomy at Carleton College. He had accepted that post in 1909, serving for 42 years, then dying in 1951 just as he was beginning partial retirement. The former Mary Ann Gross, Mrs. Gingrich, was born July 27, 1894, in York, Pa., the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Hettie Ann (Witright) Gross. She graduated from Central State Teachers College in Lockhaven, Pa., and a music conservatory in Baltimore, Md. She was director of the choir at the Methodist Church in Northfield from 1923 until 1955. She served as president of the Minnesota State Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood in 1927-28. She was president of the Minnesota Council of Church Women from 1940 until 1948. She was active in the General Federation of Womens Clubs, elected district president in 1936. She was Northfield Girl Scout commissioner in 1933-35. She chaired the Northfield United Nations Committee in 1951. Mrs. Gingrich moved from Northfield to Morgantown, W.Va., where her son-in-law and daughter, Robert and Gertrude Feather, were living and then moved with them to Gainesville 24 years ago. She is survived by her daughter, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon in First United Church at Gainesville. Mr. and Mrs. Feather are expected to arrive in Northfield Thursday and there will be a visitation Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the Bierman Funeral Home. A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Oaklawn Cemetery where Dr. Gingirch is buried
