Horace Rudolph "Rudy" Grissom, SFC U.S. Army (Retired), 79, born June 5, 1923 in Henderson, N.C., son of Willie and Zelma Knott Grissom, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Charlie. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Thelma Williams Grissom; five daughters, Victoria and her husband, Roger Clements, Lila and her husband, Joseph Johndrow, Carolyn Hall and Michael Bryan, Sandra and her husband, William Lilly, Nancy and her husband, SMSgt James Banes; three brothers, Jesse, W.T. and Delano; three sisters, Nettie, Pearl and Lucy; 13 grandchildren, John Poe III, Sherry Koenig, Barbara Silva, Cheryl Boston, Naomi and Rachael Johndrow, Amanda Huff, Chris Cummings (whom he raised as a son), Samantha and Rusty Hall, Paul Lilly, Michelle Crowder and Michael Bolton Jr.; and 20 great-grandchildren. He joined the Army in 1942, serving time in the infantry during WWII in N. Africa, Anzio and then into Germany. He felt his greatest honor was being one of the soldiers liberating the prisoners from Auschwitz. He retired 21 years later at Ft. Lee. After his military career he was an Inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways until his retirement in 1986. A lifetime member of Glen Allen American Legion Post 244, 11th District for 50 years, he was adjutant 25 years, Post Commander for two, receiving a dedicated service award prior to his death, and was a lifetime member of Glen Allen VFW Post 10657. He and his wife were lifetime members of Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, joining the squad during its second year, both being among the first EMT graduates. The past 10 years he worked as a volunteer driver and in the pharmacy at McGuire's Veterans Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McGuire Veterans Hospice Unit.
