Birth: Apr. 28, 1910
Death: Jun. 6, 2012

Norfolk- Edmonia Markham Grissom, 102 years young, was called home to heaven to be with the Lord on June 6, 2012. Mona, as so many called her, was a grand lady of grace, character, class and charm. She was born "on the creek" of Munford, Va. in 1910 to parents Lena and Howard Markham. After completing school, she worked in a fabric mill. She was a self-taught professional seamstress working purely from word of mouth. Her expertise not only went from making all the family clothes, it was making professional roller skating competition outfits, evening gowns and bathing suits to the family's airplane wings and car seat covers. Along with her sewing, Mona was proficient in quilting, embroidering and crocheting but sewing was her passion. She took pride in her handwriting and her penmanship was so precise and elegant that she was often asked to write formal documents and letters. Mona loved her flower beds and vegetable gardens and was known for her perfectly seasoned home cooking, her home grown canned vegetables and her always asked for dessert, Chess Bars. More than anything was her love for her family and church. Her unwavering faith brought her through everything life dealt her. She was a lifelong member of Coleman Place Presbyterian Church, Sunday School teacher and Deacon. Mona will be remembered as a lady of quiet strength who never thought of herself but put the needs and concerns of others first. Rather than complain or criticize, she would show love and concern. Her life was a true reflection of God's grace, compassion and love. A remarkable woman, fiercely independent, strong, tenacious and incredibly giving, she always put others before herself and preferred to give rather than receive. She didn't like to be fussed over or draw attention to herself but would rather let others take the glory. She certainly left us with innumerable happy memories and she was a friend to all. She loved life and lived it with joy in her heart. She touched our lives in so many ways. She radiated love, laughter and life. Over the past 102 years, Mona has seen and done things we could never have imagined: 6 wars, 18 Presidents of the United States, men walking on the moon, the invention of TV, etc. She has traveled through all 50 states in the U.S. and Canada and also toured with her daughter, Shirley, through 30 European countries and North Africa. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Trout, she leaves behind her daughter, Shirley Grissom of Norfolk, her son, Wendell Grissom and wife Janet of Spout Spring, Va., two loving grandsons, Wendell, Jr., and William and wife Tara of Florida, four great grandchildren, Josh, Sara Beth, Christopher and Dustin, and two great great grandchildren, Jacob Eugene and Parker Sidney. Time cannot even begin to erase this phenomenal woman's touch upon our lives. She was a true inspiration to all, had the grace to serve God and the church, the love to serve her family and the energy to serve her community. While we grieve our loss, we are yet thankful to have had such an opportunity to know her. Our lives have been doubly enriched because she sojourned this way. The family would like to give special thanks to Jeff Davis for being such a wonderful friend. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Va. Beach Boulevard, Norfolk on Sunday evening, June 10, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Mona's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11, at Coleman Place Presbyterian Church, 1513 Sewells Point Road, Norfolk, with Rev. Fred Archer officiating. A graveside service will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Rd
