Barbara Nell Bacon Grinstead, 87, died Thursday morning, November 28, 2002, at Claxton Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville, Georgia, all of her life. She was retired from the Tattnall County School System. She served over the years as an elementary and high school teacher and counselor. In addition, she taught from time to time overflow classes for the Georgia Southern University History Department. She also taught classes at Brewton-Parker College. She was a member of Reidsville United Methodist Church, and the Lillian Eason Sunday School Class where she taught from time to time. She held membership in the General Josiah Tattnall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society of Georgia, the Retired Teachers Association, the Reidsville Grand Rascallettes, and the Reidsville Garden Club. She was an avid gardener, and loved to cook and crochet for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estin Grinstead, and her daughter, Brenda Shuman.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Anna Shuman of Reidsville; three grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law: Ben Shuman of Glennville, Georgia; and John and Lana Shuman and Mark and Victoria Shuman, all of Reidsville; a son-in-law, Buck Shuman of Reidsville; one sister, Joan Bacon White of Glennville; one aunt, Zelma Keels of Glennville; three great-grandchildren: Megan Shuman, Luke Shuman, and Chapman Shuman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, at Reidsville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hudson and the Rev. Marshall Singletary officiating. Interment followed in Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ben Shuman; Robert Balkcom; John Shuman; Dennis White, Jr.; Mark Shuman; and Dewey Nail.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation or to Reidsville United Methodist Church.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home of Reidsville, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.
