Father John "Jack" Grinnen, T.O.R., 67, of the Third Order Regular Franciscans of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, died Sunday at St. Francis Friary/Mount Assisi Friary, Loretto.

He was born in DuBois, son of the late Calvin E. and Ellen (Kelly) Grinnen. Surviving are a brother, Andrew of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Mary Ellen Sable of Friday Harbor, Wash.; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and his Franciscan brothers.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James.

Father Jack graduated from Central Catholic High School, DuBois. He entered the Third Order Regular Franciscans on Sept. 8, 1963. He professed his temporary vows at Sacred Heart Friary, Winchester, Va., on July 1, 1966, and his solemn vows at Immaculate Conception Chapel, Loretto, on July 1, 1970. He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop James Hogan of the Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Loretto, on May 6, 1972.

Father Jack received a B.A. degree in philosophy from St. Francis College, Loretto, in 1968 and a Master of Divinity from St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, in 1972. He received a Master of Arts in drama from West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., in 1972. Father Jack ministered as the following: instructor of English and chairman of the Religious Studies Department at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio; assistant professor of English at St. Francis College, Loretto; retreat ministry at Franciscan Renewal Center, Winchester, Va.; treasurer at Sacred Heart Friary, Winchester, Va.; assistant pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Dunedin, Fla.; and weekend parochial work while at St. Anthony Friary, Fairless Hills. In 2001, Father Jack went to Sacred Heart Friary in White Post, Va., and in 2006 he went to St. Francis Friary/Mount Assisi Friary, Loretto, where he was in the ministry of prayer. For many years of his ordained life, he did counseling, 12-step work and spiritual direction.

Friends were received Monday, July 23, 2012, at the chapel of St. Francis Friary, Loretto, where a funeral Mass was concelebrated Tuesday, July 24, 2012, with the Very Rev. Nicholas Polichnowski, T.O.R., minister provincial, as principal celebrant. After the Mass, committal took place at the Franciscan Friars cemetery on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto.
