ODESSA -- Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church for Jesse Taylor Grimes, III, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996, at Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.

Jess Grimes, 71, was born on Sept. 26, 1925, in Bessemer, Ala. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Taylor Grimes Jr. and Dana Owens Grimes.

Grimes came to the area in the late '40s as a professional baseball player, having pitched for the Atlanta Crackers, Roswell Rockets and Odessa Oilers from 1947 to 1951.

On April 14, 1950, Grimes married Mary Meyer, a nurse from Springfield, Ill.

Jess Grimes was a hard- working man up until a month before his death. He was a 23-year employee of Black-Sivall's and Bryson and was a self-employed welder, having founded Grimes Welding and Construction in 1974.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1944 to 1946. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 430.

Grimes will always be remembered as an avid sportsman with a love of football and baseball. His love of hunting was surpassed only by his love of fishing.

Pallbearers: Michael Ashton, Denn Whalen, Felix Fernandez, Tom Moore, James Humphrey, Donald Pradon, Michael Kelly and Blake Martin. Honorary pallbearers: Walt Beavers, Ferd McDowell, Raymond Williams, Bob Dockery, Ned Coffee and Troy Bowers.
