Maxine Zuercher, daughter of Walter H. and Ila Bell (Reed) Grigsby, was born July 5, 1919, 3 ½ miles south of Attica, Kansas. She attended school at Attica, graduating from Attica High School in 1937. She then attended college at Emporia State Teachers College.
On August 9, 1941, she was united in marriage with Alvin Leslie Zuercher at Attica, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children: Judy, Jyl and Jon. The family made their home near Attica, where Maxine taught several years at the Valley Forge rural school.
Maxine was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church from early youth and served in various jobs in the church. She converted and gave her heart to the Lord when Reverend Lyons was the pastor in the 1930's. In the 1980's, she rededicated her life during an "Abundant Life and Holy Spirit" meeting. She also belonged to the United Methodist women for 68 years, serving as President for 22 years and two months. She taught preschool at the church and spent 60 years helping with the nursery in the church. Maxine was also active in several civic organizations throughout the years.
On Saturday, February 21, 2009, Maxine passed away at the Harper Hospital at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 16 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin on April 16, 1970; her parents; a daughter, Jyl Zuercher; three brothers, Lester, Leonard and Myron Grigsby; four sisters, Wava Kaiser, Maurine Barber, Wilda Graves, Anna Mae Turner and three infant sisters.
Maxine will be deeply missed by her son, Jon Zuercher and wife, Jana of Bucklin, KS; daughter, Judy Bane and husband, Terry; brother-in-law, Keith Turner; sister-in-law, Betty Grigsby, all of Attica; four granddaughters: Holly Bane of Harper, Heidi Bane of Wichita, Jessica Lindsey of Mesquite, TX and Haley Lindsey of Bucklin; and a host of many other relatives and friends
