Lt. Colonel United States Army Reserve
of Tryon, NE was born October 5, 1913 to George and Agnes Dahlin Griffith in Denver, CO and passed from this life September 29, 2010 at Linden Court, in North Platte, NE. As a child he lived in Nebraska, Tennessee Arizona and California, and graduated from McPherson County High School in 1931. He taught rural schools, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, worked on ranches in Nebraska and Wyoming, and attended the University of Nebraska . At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the U S Army and served in the occupation at the end of the war. While there he met and married Florene (Hank) Henry. They had four children, William Jr, Mary Ellen, John and Susan.

Bill returned to the family homestead in McPherson County following his service, where he ranched, did roadwork, helped build Tryon's High School and taught vocational ag for veterans and was employed by the USDA in Stapleton and Hastings NE. He was very involved in the Stapleton community and was the Boy Scout Leader for a number of years. After his retirement he moved back to the ranch in the Sandhills. Hank preceded him in death and Bill married Doris Musser Hallsted. He enjoyed an active retirement on the ranch and was assisted in later years by his granddaughter Angie Stickney.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hank; brother, Dale Holman; sisters, Ruth Edwards and Thayne Nilmeier; and stepson Kevin Hallsted. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of Tryon, NE; children, Billy Griffith, Princeton WV, Mary Ellen Griffith, Princeton WV, John (Karen) Griffith, Spearfish SD, and Susan (John) Stickney, Stapleton NE. Also surviving are Stepdaughters, Linda () Penny, and Pat (Paul) Ekberg. Grandchildren include Angie Stickney, Amy (Corey) Keach, Kim (Nick) Kalina, Kate Griffith, Shoshanna Griffith, and Este Griffith; step-grandchildren, John Ekberg and Melissa (John) Murante; as well as great grandsons Will Stickney, Paul Kalina and Hayden Ekberg; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to either the McPherson County or Logan County Volunteer Fire Department.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2010 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home with the Reverend Shannon Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with full military honors graveside.
