Son of William Rotan Griffith and Susannah Walden. Enlisted in the Confederate States Army at the age of 18. Served in Co. F, 14th (McCarver's) Arkansas Infantry and Co. B, 12th Battalion Arkansas Sharp Shooters. With the latter, he was captured 17 May 1863 in the Battle of Big Black River near Vicksburg, MS. He was held prisoner until the end of the War at Point Lookout, MD, Ft. Delaware, DE, and Elmira, NY. After the war, he married Isabel Armstrong on 27 Feb 1866 in Lawrence County, and was the father of 6 children. He was a farmer and Justice of the Peace in Fulton County. As his grandfather and uncle were also named Dan Griffith, he was often referred to as "Little Dan".
