Born Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia). During the Mexican War served in Colonel Humprhey Marshall's 1st Kentucky Cavalry. After the war he was a "Forty-Niner" during the California gold rush. During the Civil War he served as lieutenant colonel of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. The 1st Kentucky Cavalry served as an escort for the fleeing Confederate government and Jefferson Davis. Griffith served two terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, 1854-55, and 1878-79.
