Kathryn Elizabeth Griffin Asel, 91, of the Golden Living Center, Oil City, died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, July 4, 2011, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Kathryn was born Dec. 23, 1919, a daughter of the late Earl and Amelia Geltz Burt, and one of 13 children. She was later known as Kay.
She attended the Plumer School.
She was married in June 1936 to Robert S. Griffin and later gave birth to Mary (Ginger) currently living with her husband, Bob Mangel, in Pleasantville; Robert Griffin, residing with his wife, Janet, in Oil City; Carole, who resides with her husband, Charles Turk, in Plumer; and Gary, who resides with his wife, Alva, in Centerville. Robert preceded Kay in death in April 1978.
Kay married Richard Asel in August 1981, and he preceded her in death in July 1983.
She was past matron of the Morris Chapter , Eastern Star No. 14, Rouseville, and a member of the Plumer Methodist Church. Mrs. Asel was a member and past president of the Plumer Community Association, the Plumer Ladies Aide Society and of the Plumer Home Days, and was the oldest living resident of Plumer. Kay held several jobs over the years including working in the mica department at the G.T. E. Sylvania plant outside of Titusville. She retired from the plant with full pension. She had also worked for many years at Sonoski's Market in Rouseville.
She is survived by two sisters, Shirley Settlemire and Bernice Braden; two brothers, Allen Burt and Alvin Burt; and several nieces and nephews. Kay also had 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren and two stepchildren, Rita Coursen and Robin Asel.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Marie Bennet, Helen Wagner, Dora Mae Bossard, Beatrice Wilson and Wanda Anthony; and three brothers, Donald, Glenn and Gordon Burt.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory in Oil City and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Thursday at Plumer United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas Phillips presiding.
