Mrs. Oveda Griffin Arnold, 90, died Saturday night (August 27, 2011) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was a native of Fairfax in the Millwood area, and lifelong resident of Ware County. She was a devoted and loving homemaker who loved the Lord. She has been a member of Zion Hill Freewill Baptist Church since 1936 where she served as secretary and treasurer, Sunday School teacher and on the Building Committee in 1960 and 2003-2004. She was a member of Woodmen of the World, Ware County Farm Bureau, and served as a volunteer for "Meals on Wheels", The Carter Center, Salvation Army and the Winona Park Sojourners. She was also one of the first contributors to help develop the Hospice Satilla House which she believed is a vital service to our community.
Affectionately known as "Granny Arnold" and the "Flower Lady", Mrs. Arnold learned to grow up and live on the farm working tirelessly with her hands. She was also a shrewd business woman who worked alongside her late husband, J. C., as secretary and treasurer of the family businesses. Her generosity and kindness will be remembered by the many lives that she touched throughout her life.
Two of Mrs. Oveda's greatest passions were her church and her love for planting and growing flowers. She was actively involved with her church and had the greatest love and devotion to her Lord and Savior. She also loved to plant and arrange flowers to give to the elderly or the sick. Often she would leave the flowers unmarked on another's doorstep, but everyone instantly knew they were "Granny Arnold's" flowers by her signature bachelors buttons. Overall she was a considerate wife, a devoted parent, a true friend, and an earnest Christian who spent every ounce of her energy to love and take care of her family, friends, and neighbors.
She is the daughter of the late Lonnie Franklin Griffin and Sabarah Davis Griffin. She is preceded in death by her late husband, John Calvin "J. C." Arnold; one sister, Estelle G. Thomas; a special nephew, Billy Hue Thomas; one half-sister, Margie G. Nation; and one half-brother, Bill L. Griffin.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean McCarty (husband Benny) and Clarice A. Miles both of Waycross; three sons, Huey Arnold (wife Marietta), Lorin Arnold (wife Darlene) and Norman Arnold (wife Rita) all of Waycross; 11 grandchildren, Deborah K. Brooks, Dale Arnold, Daune Arnold, Ashley Arnold, Alesia A. Brantley, Dana A. Walker; special cousin, Levo Steedley; and numerous other friends and relatives.
