Karen Swisher Grey

Karen Swisher Grey passed away on July 25, 2006, after a very courageous fight with breast cancer.

Karen was born in Salinas, California, on October 26, 1952 to Vinetta Macdonald Swisher and William Lovell Swisher.

She was raised in Florida and California and attended Ernest Righetti high school in Santa Maria, California. She initially attended college at USC but transferred to Stanford in 1971.

At Stanford she earned her undergraduate degree in Economics, then attended Stanford Business School, where she earned an MBA.

Following her graduation, Karen worked for Bank of America for three years. At Stanford, Karen met Richard S. Grey, whom she married in August 1975. They had more than 30 years of a wonderful marriage and family life.

In 1976 they moved to Piedmont, where they lived until 1993. All of their three children were born while the family lived in Piedmont, Kathleen Anne in 1979, David Cleveland in 1983, and Thomas Richard in 1988.

The family moved to Kentfield in 1993. Karen was loved by all who knew her. She was intelligent and sweet. But she also had a strong "no nonsense" streak, and one could count on her to identify the proper path to follow, and to point it out - without much uncertainty - to those whom she loved.

Karen loved her family more than anything and derived tremendous satisfaction from maintaining a warm, stable and loving home. Karen was a notable volunteer, holding at one time or another many different positions with parent groups at Piedmont and Marin County schools.

She was always modest about her participation, but the common sense of her views inevitably came to be respected by those who knew her.

Karen also loved needlework, gardening, reading, walking and sports.

She was a devoted member of the East Bay Garden Club, through which she maintained her Piedmont friendships, and the Woodland Sponsors.

A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, July 28.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in her honor to The Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244, or to any charity of the donor's choice.

From one Righetti Warrior to another one. I was saddened to learn of your loss. I'll always remember you because of your mother. She taught me much. In a sailor's custom; Fair winds and following seas.
