Orson Gregory (1929-2009)

Gregory, Orson (original name:
Arsenios P. Gligorievitch) of Ojai, CA
March 15, 1929 - October 19, 2009
Orson Gregory, a 25-year resident of Manhattan Beach and 27-year resident of Ojai CA, passed away on October 19. Orson was born March 15, 1929, in Salonika, Greece. He was the second of ten children of Peter and Elpiniki Gligorievitch. Early in his teenage years, Orson took on a tremendous responsibility within his family as they endured the challenges of WWII and the Greek Civil War which immediately followed. In 1948, at the age of 19, he immigrated to the United States, alone, on a student visa. After being detained on Ellis Island for 81 days due to a passport issue, he settled for a short time in St. Joseph, MO., where he attended college while working in his uncle's store. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed at Ft. Bragg Psychological Warfare Center, NC. Upon completing his military service he became a U.S. citizen, and changed his name to Orson Gregory. Orson came to California in 1956 where he met his future wife, Alyce (McManus) Gregory. The two married and settled in Manhattan Beach, CA where they raised four sons. Mr. Gregory was in business for himself and owned and operated Orson Gregory Chevron Service on 45th Street and Highland Avenue in Manhattan Beach for more than 20 years. In 1976, he purchased a small orange and avocado ranch in Ojai, CA and retired there with Alyce in 1982. They had been residents of Ojai since that time. Mr. Gregory is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alyce; sons, Thomas (Melinda) of Eagle, ID, Paul (Christine) of Manhattan Beach, CA, Phillip (Heller) of Walnut Creek, CA; and a daughter-in-law, Dolores Cabrera of Bowling Green, KY; two sisters, Freeda (Gary) Harrington of Mission Viejo, CA, and Vicky (Buzz) Aguiar of Overland Park, KS; four brothers, Mike (Lily), Gus, Gregg (Helen), and Tom (Barbara) all of Overland Park, KS; five grandsons; and three granddaughters; a brother-in-law, Allan McManus; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Gus (Constantine) (1988); a grandson, Arsenios (1988); two sisters, Vera and Melissa; and brother, Miskos. Orson was a hard working man of great character and a dedicated husband, father, son and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and neighbors. A Trisagion will be held at Rice Mortuary Chapel on Friday, October 23, 2009, at 7:00 P.M. Services to be held Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. also at Rice Mortuary Chapel, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, CA. Graveside service will be held at Green Hills Cemetery, 27501 Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA immediately following the church service.
