Dies At Age of 95

Mrs. Lee M. Greer Sr., a former Henry Countian, who was the mother of Paris business leader Lee Greer, died at 6 PM Tuesday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She was 95.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Friday at Palestine Methodist Church, where she was the first woman ever chosen to the Board of Stewards. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body is to arrive this afternoon at McEvoy Funeral Home.

Born in Carroll County Nov. 14, 1872, Mrs. Greer was the former Addie Lee Oliver. She was reared in Henry County and lived in the Palestine community until 1943, when Oak Hall, her home for many years, burned to the ground.

A former school teacher, Mrs. Greer had a hobby of writing. Several stories for children, feature articles and poems were published. She also grew chrysanthemums and furnished many flowers to churches here.

She was the daughter of a country doctor, James M. Oliver and Betty Haynes Oliver. In 1903, she was married to the late Lee Martin Greer Sr.

After her husband’s death in 1936, she and her son continued to operate the family farm at Oak Hall until World War II.

She was active in community club work, and community fairs were held on the lawns of Oak Hall.

Mrs. Greer was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society of Founders of Manakin, and Daughters of the American Colonists.

Survivors include her son and a daughter, Mrs. Guy McMaster of Jackson; a brother, Charles Oliver of New Orleans, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pattie, Mrs. J Paxton Hill Jr. of Avon Paris, Fla.; a sister, Miss Jennie Oliver of Paris, and three brothers, John Oliver of Dalhart, Tex., Henry Oliver of Union City and Haynes Oliver of Tulsa, Okla.
